The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 produced over 400 times more fallout than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Over 300,000 people were relocated, mainly from the town of Pripyat. The inhabitants abandoned their town immediately, leaving food half eaten and schoolbooks still open on their desks.
These have to be amongst the saddest photographs I have seen…
A few people have gained access over the years, and here are some of their photographs.
If you are interested in seeing more photographs and reading about a trip made to Chernobyl, I highly recommend Timm Suess’s Chernobyl Journal.
