Irving Penn (June 16, 1917 – October 7, 2009)

Irving Penn became well known during the 1940s for his fashion photographs, mainly for Vogue. His distinct style was to photograph in an austere studio, using subtle lighting to bring out the features of his subjects (a technique he attributed to a year learning to paint in Mexico).

Photographers in the UK are under suspicion everywhere. I have been stopped by over zealous security guards twice, while going about my lawful business, photographing from public land. It seems that the Police and other ‘security personel’ have got it into their minds that carrying a camera is connected with gathering intelligence for illegal use.
